Peter Ogolla 13th February 2024

The news of your departure struck me hard. For years, I've nurtured the dream of journeying to the UK, hoping to personally express my immense gratitude for the remarkable impact you've had on my life. Yet, when that day comes, I will be greeted not by your warm presence, but by the solemnity of your resting place. I will miss the sight of the man who was a beacon of principles and love. The room will lack the genuine smile and the caring gaze of the indomitable figure I’ve grown up admiring. There is a lot that I can write about you, but what is etched in my heart, and I'm sure in many others, is the privilege we've had to know you and learn from you. Our first meeting in 2005 at the Starehe Boy’s Centre followed by the Sunday drive through the Nairobi National Park; the lunch at Mamba Village and evening tea at Giraffe Centre remain vivid in my mind. I will miss the many conversations that we had and the readiness with which you celebrated every one of my little successes. The bold inscription on the doors of the Assembly Hall at Starehe, “From those to whom much has been given, much will be required”, resonate with me now more than ever. I feel a deep sense of obligation and am committed to carrying forward the torch you've passed on to us. Until we meet again on those beautiful shores, rest in peace, Malcolm. Your legacy lives on.
